Hilary Mantel’s The Mirror and The Light is the final installment in her remarkable trilogy about the life of Thomas Cromwell. The first two, Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, each won the Booker Prize, and the conclusion of the trilogy is fittingly brilliant. The book opens at the scene of Anne Boleyn’s execution (spoiler alert!), which Cromwell orchestrated in Bring Up the Bodies, and covers his efforts to navigate the repercussions and the incredibly complex power dynamics surrounding Henry VIII. There are lawyers, of course, and important questions of sovereignty, church, and state. Still, this is a very different and entirely absorbing kind of “court” intrigue — an immersive and enjoyable read.
