Duke Law School took on the publication of Judicature in May 2015 after the American Judicature Society (AJS) disbanded. AJS had promoted the interests of justice and the judiciary through advocacy and through its flagship publication, Judicature, for more than a century.
From 2015 to 2018, Judicature was published by the Duke Law Center for Judicial Studies. Dean David F. Levi established the center in 2011 to foster exploration of the judiciary and case-resolution process from different points of view and to bring scholars, practitioners, and judges together in collaborative efforts to understand, support, and advance our judicial system. Judicature complemented the center’s mission and offered a means to strengthen this bench-bar-academy coalition. The center worked to bring a fresh perspective to Judicature by publishing articles that are useful and relevant to judges and the study of judging or advance improvements in the administration of justice.
Judicature is now published under the auspices of the Bolch Judicial Institute at Duke Law School, which was established in 2018 to study and promote the rule of law. Because we believe deeply in the relevance and value of Judicature, the Institute provides a complimentary subscription to every Article III judge, federal magistrate judge, and state supreme court justice. We offer a deeply discounted subscription rate to all other state and federal judges. With the support of our sponsors, subscribers, and contributors, Judicature continues to illuminate the practical challenges of the practice of judging, the ideas and research that advance our understanding of the law, and the shared labor of the bench, bar, and academy as we seek to improve the administration of justice and advance the rule of law.
In the fall of 2021, Judicature International launched online to provide judges around the globe with a forum for sharing commentary, scholarship, empirical research, opinion, and other content exploring issues of common concern to judges around the world, including court administration, the rule of law, transnational law, and judicial independence. Judicature International is currently an online-only publication; to receive a monthly email with the latest articles and news, please sign up for our mailing list.
