Judicature Writing Competition for Emerging Scholars

Deadline to Submit: October 1, 2024

Judicature is pleased to announce the first annual writing competition for emerging scholars. The winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize and the option to publish the winning entry in a future print edition of Judicature. Publication of the winning entry will be subject to Judicature’s standard editorial process. All authors retain the copyright to their submission, unless the winner chooses to publish his or her work in Judicature, which requires licensing certain rights to Judicature.

Eligible writers: Law School Graduating Classes of 2022, 2023, and 2024

Length: 6,000 words maximum (including citations)

Topic: Must be related to judges, judging, judicial administration, or the rule of law

Additional Details:

  • Entrants must be current legal residents of the U.S.
  • Only single-author works will be accepted, and only one entry will be accepted per person.
  • Citations must be in Bluebook style.
  • Essays should be submitted as a Microsoft Word document, double-spaced, in Times New Roman font.
  • Judicature editors and members of the editorial board will make the final selection and also reserve the right to make no selection.

Submissions: Two copies of the essay (one with identifying information and one without) and a resume should be emailed to judicature@law.duke.edu with the subject line “Writing Contest Submission.” The essay with identifying information should include full name, phone number, email address, mailing address, law school, and graduation year. The deadline to submit an entry is October 1, 2024.
